With the aim of developing students’ qualities and abilities holistically through a fundamental and comprehensive reform policy in education and training, especially the introduction of classes twice a day according to the 2018 Comprehensive Curriculum, the Ministry of Education and Training is recruiting experts, craftsmen, artists, coaches, athletes, etc. education Official Notice No. 5215 regarding participation in activities was issued. This boldly innovated the way schools operate the second class period, presented important directions and established a legal framework to connect school education with social reality.
Damdoi High School located in a remote area ( Ca Mau ) clearly recognizes that holding classes twice a day in high schools is not just about increasing time for learning academic subjects, but also diversifying teaching methods and creating an environment where students can learn, experience, practice skills, and develop talents.
Based on this, the school selected the school club model as the main organizational form for operating classes in the second semester, and also carried out activities to foster gifted students, review classes for students preparing for high school graduation exams, and support activities for students who had insufficient academic performance last semester.
Accordingly, the school focuses on academics, arts, fine arts, sports 28 clubs were established across a variety of fields, including life skills and volunteer activities, to create a diverse and flexible educational ecosystem tailored to the needs and interests of students.
Dam Doi High School principal Pham Viet Hung said that each club operates on the principle of voluntary participation, and that school teachers serve as club leaders and are responsible for managing, guiding activities, and meeting safety and educational requirements. Club activities are carried out according to specific monthly and semester plans, and are linked to clear educational goals, avoiding formal and superficial activities.
“During the implementation process, the school prioritizes utilizing existing faculty and staff to organize and guide club activities based on their abilities and strengths.”
In certain fields such as martial arts, professional music, performing arts, and high-performance sports, we are actively implementing the purpose of the Ministry of Education and Training’s Enforcement Decree No. 5215 by inviting coaches, musicians, singers, and artists with expertise and reputation to support the club’s education and training.
Principal Damdoi High School said, “Inviting these experts not only ensures the professional level of club activities, but also provides students with the opportunity to gain practical work experience, which helps form a sound understanding of their future career paths.”
Holding two classes a day through the school club model makes Damdoi High School’s second-year classes more lively, especially on Friday afternoons when all clubs meet at the same time.
Reporters observed that during martial arts training held at the school, students participated actively and enthusiastically, demonstrating more professional moves under the direct guidance of qualified instructors.
Van Thanh Xuan, a member of the Ca Mau Province Martial Arts Federation, said, “I support the school by holding classes once a week. I mainly teach students martial arts and self-defense techniques, participate in school festivals, and teach students self-defense techniques to ensure their safety on the way to and from school. I think it is very good to run a second class in the form of a club, so I am willing to support the school by paying the appropriate tuition.”
“Participating in sports and physical activities in the afternoon improves my health, makes me happier and reduces the stress of studying. I am very passionate about martial arts, especially Vovinam. By joining a martial arts club and receiving direct instruction from skilled coaches, I gained confidence and quickly improved my skills, preparing me for regional and national competitions,” said Bo Thuet Doan, a student in Class 12A12.
“After a stressful morning of studying, I feel much more relaxed and happy by participating in cultural activities in the afternoon,” said Ram Ka Bhi, a student in class 11A8 at the school and an active member of the arts club.
“In the past, I mostly sang instinctively, and often the pitch and tempo were off. However, I am feeling a positive change after receiving direct guidance from an expert. I am able to sing more accurately according to music theory, and my stage performance skills have also improved.”
Vo Hoang My, who previously worked at a local cultural center and now works as a freelance dancer, said she mainly helps students in the school’s dance department by guiding them in choreographing cultural performances.
“Most of the students who participate in the club are talented or passionate about dancing, so it is easy to teach. At first, we mainly focus on learning a few dance styles and movements and creating simple choreography. Once a solid foundation is established, we allow students to do creative activities on their own,” Mai said.
Principal Pham Viet Hung said the school’s clubs do not charge students any fees and are financed primarily from the school’s operating budget.
“To save costs, when schools bring in art experts, they give priority to alumni – people who have a close relationship with the school, pass on their passion to the younger generation and support the school. So most people do not attach much importance to the cost,” Mr Hung said.
Kwa Chi Hung Truk, an alumnus of the school, said he is currently teaching art at another school, but when he was asked to help with the art club class at his school, he immediately agreed and made time to participate in the club’s activities.
“I am very happy to be able to contribute to the school I attended. There are currently 46 students participating in the art club. We took the students’ talents into account and provided them with an appropriate level of education from basic to advanced, and after several months of study, all students completed at least two works of art. The club plans to hold an art exhibition at the end of the year,” Truk said.
“Over time, school club activities have brought about many positive changes. Students have become more self-directed, more enthusiastic, and more engaged in learning and training. Many students have shown significant improvements in their talents, communication skills, activity planning, and cooperation.”
From the school’s perspective, the club model contributes to improving the overall quality of education and creating a friendly and dynamic learning environment that is consistent with the educational philosophy of a ‘happy school’. At the same time, expanding cooperation with coaches, craftsmen and artists helps the school become more connected to the community and society, which also meets the needs of contemporary education reform, said Pham Viet Hung, principal of Dam Doi High School.
