Imagine a scenario were a critical piece of evidence, a nuanced interaction, or even sarcasm is misinterpreted by an algorithm and enshrined in an official police report. this isn’t science fiction; it’s a very real possibility with current AI-powered report writing tools. These tools, like Axon’s Draft One, are designed to convert audio from body-worn cameras into written reports. But without proper oversight, they can introduce errors and obscure the truth, perhaps impacting investigations, prosecutions, and ultimately, justice.

Self-reliant researchers haven’t been able to thoroughly test the system’s ability to accurately interpret complex communication – things like sarcasm, out-of-context statements, or interactions in languages other than English.
More critically, Draft One doesn’t retain different versions of the draft. This design flaw creates a risky loophole,allowing officers to deflect responsibility by claiming,”The AI wrote that.” S.B.524 directly addresses this issue by mandating draft retention.
