Serious incidents were reported at the stadium Creek Giant in the preview of the match between Central Rosary y Penarol for the first date of group G of the Libertadores Cup, which both share with Atlético Mineiro and Caracas. A group of Canalla fans threw barriers at the Uruguayan club’s fans, who had been located in the stands below and responded by throwing whatever they had at hand. Security agencies had to intervene to prevent further damage.

There was just over an hour until the start of the game and the scenario gave no guarantees. In the move, the visiting team located in a portion of the lower popular stand was “given away” beneath the local fans.

There were also no police personnel and the fences located next to the railing of the tray full of Rosario fans completed the chaotic scene. The trigger for the riots would have been some thunder bombs thrown by the Uruguayan fans into the upper tray.

The reaction brought together a group of just under 50 people who decided to throw down the fences, since there were only private security personnel to guard that space. The employees could not prevent one of the four metal structures from falling.

If there were no injuries, it was due to the intervention of private security and because the fans ran away from the “target”: the fence was stopped by an avalanche stopper and cushioned by a flag.

In that attempt to contain the fences, one of the guards was about to fall for holding the tubular structure of more than two meters, without support from the Santa Fe Police officers involved in the operation.

Several hours before the match – and the violent events – the Central Board of Directors had issued a statement asking fans to have exemplary conduct, to avoid possible sanctions from Conmebol.

Precisely, the South American Football Confederation applies severe economic sanctions to clubs whose fans are protagonists of actions of this type.
