Teh tradition of Fastnacht (Carnival) in the Palatinate region of Germany is alive and well, with various groups continuing age-old customs. Among these are the Stumpfwaldhexen (Stump Forest witches) of ramsen, who actively participate in the festivities, raising money for charitable causes.

Auch in diesem Jahr waren die Stumpfwaldhexen wieder an Altweiberfastnacht in Ramsen unterwegs.

A Long-Standing Tradition

The Stumpfwaldhexen have been a fixture of the Ramsen Fastnacht celebrations since the 1980s. SWR reports that their activities include a traditional raid on the town hall, a “witch baptism,” a “witch’s soup” offering, and a lively witch dance in the Eistalhalle. These events are not merely for entertainment; they serve as a meaningful fundraising opportunity for local charities.

Altweiberfastnacht and Beyond

Altweiberfastnacht (Old Women’s Carnival), traditionally celebrated on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, marks a key moment for the Stumpfwaldhexen. They venture out to collect donations for good causes. Following the initial festivities, a large party takes place in the Eistalhalle, starting at 8:00 PM. Other communities in the Donnersbergkreis, including Eisenberg, Göllheim, and Weitersweiler, also feature groups of witches collecting donations during Altweiberfastnacht.

what is Fastnacht?

Fastnacht,or Carnival,is a pre-Lenten festival with deep roots in European history. It’s a time for revelry, costumes, and often, satirical commentary on current events. In the Palatinate region, Fastnacht traditions are particularly vibrant, with numerous groups and communities participating in unique customs. The Stumpfwaldhexen represent a interesting example of how these traditions are kept alive and used for charitable purposes.
