South Sydney captain Cameron Murray has been ruled out of the State of Origin season opener after sustaining a hip flexor injury during Thursday evening’s game against the Penrith Panthers.

On Saturday morning, the Rabbitohs confirmed that Murray would be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks with the injury.

The 26-year-old’s injury compounds a disastrous campaign for the Bunnies, who are reeling at the bottom of the NRL ladder, while the setback will also create headaches for new NSW Blues coach Michael Maguire.

REYNOLDS SEASON COULD BE ALL OVER

The Broncos’ season could be on the line after their most important player, Adam Reynolds left the field with a serious biceps injury that could end his year.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Reynolds came reeling out of a tackle on Junior Pauga and immediately signalled to the bench that he had been injured.

After pointing to his bicep, he left the field with a trainer.

“That is an ugly sight … What will this mean for the Broncos?” Fox League commentator Dan Ginnane said.

“Brisbane’s season here is on knife’s edge,” Michael Ennis said.

“Last year’s grand finalists chasing a shot at redemption and arguably their most important player is on his haunches.”

Sideline reporter Corey Parker later revealed that the veteran halfback had suffered a suspected ruptured biceps.

“Looks like he has had a ruptured bicep. It looks like it’s come off the bone, there’s a considerable hole where your bicep attaches,” he said.

Ennis added: “That’s huge news for Brisbane’s season.”

It came after the Broncos lost Jesse Arthars to a broken jaw in the first half with the winger being taken from Suncorp Stadium to hospital.

Broncos coach Kevin Walters confirmed post-game the severity of the injury and admitted it could end the 33-year-old’s season.

“Not looking too good for him … he’s got a torn biceps, so I guess he will have to have surgery and he will be out for substantial period,” Walters said.

“Potentially (season ending). Until they get in there and operate I guess they don’t know.”

RABBITOHS’ HALVES CRISIS

Souths face a halfback crisis with Dean Hawkins joining Lachlan Ilias on the sideline after suffering a quad injury against the Panthers.

Hawkins hobbled off in the first half after suffering a quad injury from a kick-off, with Jack Wighton coming in to partner Cody Walker in the halves.

“An update on that quad injury, Dean Hawkins has been ruled out for the game,” Lara Pitt said, before later adding that Hawkins felt a ‘pop’ during the incident.

Young fullback Jye Gray was the target of an Izack Tago hip-drop tackle just six minutes into the game, which left the 20-year-old in major discomfort and required heavy strapping.

The three-game NRL rookie battled gamely for the remainder of the half but was ruled out at the intermission, with Pitt reporting that the injury was a potential syndesmosis complaint.

It forced Souths into another shuffle, with Damien Cook dropping to the fullback role.
