ChatGPT Evolves: Direct messaging and User Profiles on the Horizon

Introducing Usernames and Direct Messaging
Testing is underway for direct messaging functionality within ChatGPT. Similar to platforms like X, this feature will allow you to directly message fellow GPT users.
To facilitate this, OpenAI is introducing “username” support. You’ll soon be able to create and utilize a unique identifier within the platform. Alongside usernames, comprehensive profile support is being tested, including the ability to upload a profile picture.
AI researcher Tibor recently uncovered references to “Direct Messages” within the ChatGPT Android app (version 1.2025.273 beta). This confirms the advancement is well underway.
“Calpico” – The Code Name for Connection
The direct messaging feature is internally codenamed “Calpico” or “Calpico rooms.” Interestingly, direct messaging initially debuted in the new Sora 2 iOS app. Previously, it was assumed social features would remain exclusive to Sora 2.
Now, it appears these functionalities are expanding to ChatGPT as well. The underlying code also reveals plans for profile updates, image uploads, and real-time notifications. you can expect alerts when someone joins or leaves a chat, and push notifications for incoming messages from other users or ChatGPT itself.
