Traveling elsewhere in Canada often costs more than a getaway to Europe.

“I’m going to spend two weeks in Banff, but my tickets cost me $1,300 per person. You look, you say: ok, I’m going to spend two weeks in Paris, my tickets cost me $800 per person. What are you doing?”, gives the example of Mélanie Guillemette, owner of Voyages Aqua Terra Lévis-Québec, in an interview with TVA Nouvelles.
The owner of the travel agency Voyage 737, Caroline Lagueux, also notes that many Quebecers are opting for the Old Continent.
“Often people will do the exercise [de calculer] how much does a Vancouver versus Paris ticket cost, then often they go to the East,” she says.
The travel agency also did the exercise of comparing the cost of Canadian domestic flights to those of the United States.
“There are a lot of taxes on our products in Canada. Hotels are taxable, plane flights. We compare plane flights in Canada versus our neighbors to the South and in the United States, there is a good difference when they travel interstate,” maintains Caroline Lagueux.
This price difference between Canada and the United States is partly explained by supply and demand.
“We see in the systems that the average price of a plane ticket, and this is the real data, does not fluctuate enormously. Now, do very extreme prices fluctuate regularly? The answer, probably, is yes because of dynamic pricing,” explains Marc-André Bédard, vice-president, business development, at Jean-Lesage airport.
