This isn’t just another electric car; it’s a thoughtfully designed crossover poised to disrupt the segment. We spent a week putting the front-wheel-drive Equinox EV through its paces to bring you a detailed, honest assessment.
Power and Range: What You Need to know
At the core of the Equinox EV lies an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This provides an EPA-estimated range of 319 miles on a full charge – a very competitive figure. Real-world range, however, is always the question. During our testing in below-freezing temperatures,the vehicle initially estimated 311 miles of range.
We consistently achieved 3.5 miles per kilowatt-hour throughout the week,even while utilizing the heater. You won’t have to sacrifice comfort for efficiency. Here’s a breakdown of charging performance:
* Level 2 (AC, up to 11.5 kW): Expect approximately 36 miles of range added per hour of charging.
* DC Fast Charging (up to 150 kW): Roughly 77 miles of range can be added in just 10 minutes.
* Our Fast-Charging Experience: Starting at 34% charge, we reached 80% in about 45 minutes without preconditioning the battery. The car peaked at 75kW during this session.
Currently, the Equinox EV utilizes the CCS1 charging port. Though, Chevrolet offers an adapter for those wanting to access the growing network of NACS (North American Charging Standard) chargers.
Performance and Driving Dynamics
The front-wheel-drive Equinox EV we tested features a permanent magnet synchronous motor.It delivers a respectable 220 horsepower (164 kW) and 243 lb-ft of torque. This translates to a peppy and responsive driving experience.
Regenerative braking is a key component of the EV experience, and the Equinox EV offers two levels. You can toggle between them, or turn it off entirely, via a dedicated icon on the expansive 17.7-inch infotainment screen. Even with one-pedal driving disabled, some regenerative braking remains active, preventing true coasting.
An all-wheel-drive version is also available if you require enhanced traction.
Inside the Cabin: tech and Comfort
stepping inside, you’re greeted by a shining, clear, and responsive 17.7-inch infotainment screen. The integrated google Maps navigation is a standout feature, notably its accurate voice recognition.The backup camera is also exceptional - one of the sharpest and highest-resolution units we’ve seen all year.
However, the voice command functionality beyond navigation isn’t always perfect. We also noted the absence of Apple CarPlay integration. Many drivers will miss the ability to seamlessly connect their iPhones for music and messaging.
Despite this,the overall experience is positive. The Equinox EV offers a comfortable and modern interior, making it a pleasant place to spend time.
