Colorado, the 38th state admitted to the Union, continues to maintain its position as a significant economic and geographic force in the Mountain West. With a population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau at 5,957,493 as of July 1, 2024, the state has experienced a 3.2% growth rate since the 2020 census. As of 2023, the state reported a median household income of $92,900, ranking ninth in the nation.
The economy of Colorado is multifaceted, drawing strength from government and defense sectors, mining, agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing. Denver serves as the state’s industrial, cultural, commercial, and transportation hub. Due to its proximity to the mineral-rich Rocky Mountains, the capital city hosts numerous energy and mining companies. Additionally, Denver is recognized for its beer brewing industry and functions as a primary business center for large corporations operating within the central United States.
While the state maintains high rankings for employment, healthcare quality, and educational attainment, officials note that the economy faces long-term climate-related challenges. Increasing temperatures and diminishing water availability are expected to heavily impact the state’s agriculture, forestry, and tourism industries.
Digital Modernization of Government Services
The State of Colorado is actively pursuing a digital transformation strategy to improve accessibility for residents. A central component of this initiative is the “myColorado” platform, which is designed to streamline government services. Recent state reports indicate a push toward digital efficiency, highlighted by a major upgrade to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) systems completed in February 2026.
This modernization effort also includes the “Super Saturday Sprint” initiative, which recently facilitated services for over 1,300 residents. The official state portal, colorado.gov, currently provides online access to a range of essential services, including:
* DMV Services: Online renewal of driver licenses and identification cards.
* Unemployment Insurance: Digital management of new and existing benefit claims.
* Colorado PEAK: A centralized system for applying for and managing medical, food, and cash assistance benefits.

Geographic and Historical Context
Colorado encompasses 104,185 square miles, making it the eighth-largest state by area. Its diverse landscape includes the Southern Rocky Mountains, the Colorado Plateau, and the western edge of the Great Plains. The state’s name is derived from Spanish, meaning “colored red,” a reference to the region’s red sandstones.
The region has a long history of habitation, with Native American populations and their Paleo-Indian ancestors present for at least 13,500 years. Following the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the influx of settlers during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush of 1858–1862, Colorado was organized as a territory in 1861. It was officially admitted to the Union on August 1, 1876, earning it the nickname “The Centennial State.”

Administrative Structure
The state is governed by an administration led by Governor Jared Polis and Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera. The legislative branch consists of the General Assembly, comprised of a Senate and a House of Representatives. Administratively, Colorado is divided into 64 counties, ranging from the populous Denver and El Paso counties to rural areas across the state’s varied terrain.
As the state moves forward, the administration continues to prioritize an economy intended to work for all residents, supported by ongoing transparency efforts such as the Transparency Online Project (TOPS) and the Governor’s Dashboard, which provide public oversight of state operations.
