A harrowing encounter with two sharks during a family vacation has left a 16-year-old Colorado resident with a remarkable story of survival adn an inspiring outlook on life.Annabelle Carlson, of Denver, was enjoying a day on the water approximately three hours off the coast of Belize in August 2024 when the unimaginable occured. She and her siblings decided to jump into the clear Caribbean waters, unaware of the danger lurking beneath the surface.
Initial Attack and instinctive Response
Carlson was the first to enter the water, and her experience quickly turned terrifying. Immediately upon submerging, a shark emerged from below the boat and began attacking her hands. She reacted instinctively, employing a surprising defense mechanism.
“I threw a few punches,” Carlson recounted, explaining that fighting back was her immediate response to the sudden attack. She initially didn’t fully grasp the situation, but quickly realized she was under assault by a shark, estimated to be around six feet long and identified as a reef shark.
A Second Shark Joins the Fray
As family members and onlookers screamed in alarm and attempted to help, throwing a life ring towards Carlson, the situation escalated.She managed to loop the ring around her arm, already severely injured, as rescuers began pulling her towards the boat. Unfortunately, a second shark then launched an attack.
Witnesses reportedly began throwing oxygen tanks at the second shark in a desperate attempt to force it to release its grip. Carlson described the second attack as “pretty serious,” resulting in devastating injuries to her leg.
“My leg was pretty much gone… it was kind of just bone from right below my knee to my ankle,” she stated, detailing the extent of the damage.
Emergency Medical Intervention and Recovery
The journey to safety was arduous, taking nearly an hour and a half to reach a nearby island. From there, Carlson was airlifted to Belize Healthcare Partners hospital in Belize City. doctors where forced to amputate her leg to save her life.
Within 24 hours, she was transferred to a hospital in Miami, Florida, for continued care and recovery. Despite facing a rare infection during her rehabilitation, Carlson has maintained a remarkably positive attitude.

Remarkably, Carlson has already returned to scuba diving, demonstrating her unwavering spirit and determination to reclaim her life.she actively chooses to focus on the positive aspects of her experience.
“I feel like it’s best to see the positive side of things,” she shared.
Her resilience was further highlighted by her Halloween costume last year, where she playfully dressed as a shark attack survivor alongside a friend in a shark costume. This demonstrates her ability to find humor and strength in the face of adversity.
