A unique initiative offering emotional support to young cancer patients has been launched at La Timone hospital in Marseille, France. The “Hôpital de Mon Toudou,” ‍established by the Pharmavie association, provides plush toys – affectionately known as ⁢“Toudous”⁣ –⁤ to accompany children throughout their cancer treatment journey. This innovative ‍approach aims to reduce stress and improve the overall well-being of both patients and healthcare staff.

Easing Anxiety wiht a Fuzzy Friend

Twelve-year-old Alexia, undergoing treatment⁤ for ear cancer at La Timone, finds comfort in⁢ her Toudou.“I take it with me every time I come to the hospital,” she shares. The Toudous arrived at the⁤ hospital in July, and the dedicated “hospital for cuddly toys” officially opened ⁣on january ⁢29th,‍ 2026. These aren’t just any stuffed animals; ‍they become companions,⁢ mirroring the children’s ⁤experiences ⁤throughout their treatment.

A Symbol of Shared Experience

“It shares the illness with me,” Alexia explains, highlighting the emotional connection‍ she has formed with her Toudou. Remarkably, each Toudou receives a personalized touch: the names of ⁢all the care team members are written⁢ on‍ its back. Like the children, the plush toys are even⁢ fitted with a ⁣catheter‍ and hospital bracelet, normalizing the medical procedures and fostering a sense of solidarity. “Plus, it has‍ superhero accessories, so when there are medical procedures or chemotherapy, I put its superhero cape on,” Alexia adds.

Benefits for Patients and Families

Gladys, alexia’s mother, emphasizes the critically important impact the ‍Toudou has had. “I didn’t think she would bring ⁤it so ofen.‍ It’s become her‍ hospital companion,and it reassures her.” The Toudou also serves as a valuable educational tool, helping children understand⁣ their treatment process. Dr. Carole Coze, a pediatric oncologist at La Timone, recounts ⁣an instance⁤ where a⁤ 15-year-old patient insisted on having a⁣ needle inserted into⁢ her Toudou⁢ before undergoing a procedure herself, demonstrating the toy’s ability to alleviate anxiety.

Reducing Stress Through Play

The project, spearheaded by ⁤the Pharmavie⁢ association for the past ten years, has demonstrated tangible benefits. According ⁣to association ‍president Marie-Claude Santini, scientific studies show that Toudous reduce stress by 10% during medical procedures. ⁢This, in turn, leads to a decrease in the need for sedation and anesthesia in children. “The Toudou is also a support; we put ⁢the oxygen mask or sensors on it – it’s a real educational tool,” Santini explains.

A Miniature Hospital for Miniature Patients

A ⁢dedicated miniature hospital has been set up within the ward, allowing children to simulate scans and X-rays⁣ on their Toudous. This playful approach ⁤helps them become more pleasant with the procedures they will undergo. The installation and provision of the Toudous for ⁤three years cost €60,000, funded by generous donors. ⁤ ‍Marseille is the 14th hospital in ⁢France to benefit from this heartwarming initiative.
