The Bruges court has found ‘Ex on the Beach: Double Dutch’ star Megan and her father guilty of fraud and tampering with corona support. The court sentenced Megan to a suspended prison sentence of ten months and a fine of 8,000 euros.
“On paper I work there as a self-employed person, but I actually did nothing there”
Megan’s father was banned from working in 2018, but did not seem to listen to it: he was seen several times in his sports café Carlito’s. In the meantime, he had appointed his daughter Megan as manager on paper. In this way he tried to circumvent the professional ban. The police interviewed Megan several times, but Megan indicated that she worked in the company to earn some extra money. In reality, she acted as a stooge for her father. “On paper I work there as a self-employed person, but I actually did nothing there,” she explained, among other things.
In addition to not complying with the professional ban, Megan’s father turned out to have even more to do. Together with Megan, he tampered with the corona support they received. For example, Megan received an amount of 21,863 euros and then transferred it to her father’s account.
The judge ruled that Megan and her father were secretly working together. Megan asked for an acquittal. According to her lawyer, she would have been too young and naive to foresee the consequences. Her father also asked for an acquittal because he had ‘no knowledge of the professional ban’. His lawyer argued: “He was imposed in absentia, one year after his daughter took over the business.”
The judge imposed a suspended prison sentence of ten months and a fine of 8,000 on Megan. Her father receives the same fine, but has to serve fifteen months in prison. In addition, Megan and her father must repay the wrongfully obtained subsidies. This concerns an amount of 86,000 euros.
