Researchers at the museum in Pleven utilized drones and aerial photography to document the visible remnants of the bridge. Investigators mapped the alignment of the exposed foundations and assessed their current physical condition amidst the receding water.
Historical Scope of Constantine’s Bridge Between Ulpia Oescus and Sucidava
The monumental bridge was commissioned by Roman Emperor Constantine the Great, who was present for its official opening in 328 AD. The structure spanned the Danube River to connect the ancient cities of Ulpia Oescus on the southern bank and Sucidava on the opposite shore.
Ulpia Oescus was situated near the present-day village of Gigen in northern Bulgaria, while Sucidava stood near Corabia in Romania. Measuring approximately 2,400 meters in length, the crossing stood as the longest river bridge of the ancient world and the most impressive span of its era.
Despite its scale, the bridge had a brief operational lifespan. Historians estimate that the structure suffered severe damage or was largely destroyed around 367 AD.

The exposure of the Roman bridge follows a wider pattern of shrinking riverbeds across Europe driven by prolonged summer heatwaves and severe drought conditions. In late July, the declining water levels in Bulgaria revealed prehistoric mammoth bones.
Low river conditions have similarly impacted other parts of the continent. In Slovakia, receding waters recently exposed a World War II-era naval mine.
