Inspiration from the Past
journe’s breakthrough came through researching Ambroise Paré, a 16th-century French barber surgeon. Paré was a pioneer in prosthetic limbs, most notably Le Petit Lorrain – an iron and leather prosthetic hand.
This remarkable device featured hidden gears and springs, allowing the fingers to move with surprising dexterity. The intricate mechanics of Paré’s creation directly inspired Journe’s solution for indicating time on the FFC timepiece.
“Speaking with Francis in 2012 and hearing his idea on the use of a human hand to indicate time inspired me to create a watch I never could have imagined myself,” Journe explained. “The challenge was formidable – exactly the type of watchmaking project I adore.”
A Labor of Precision
Journe meticulously crafted six prototypes before delivering the final watch to Coppola in 2021. The result is a stunning example of horological artistry,seamlessly blending innovative design with conventional watchmaking techniques.

Sadly, Eleanor Coppola, a celebrated documentary filmmaker and writer, passed away in 2024 after 61 years of marriage. Her own F.P.
