Córdoba’s Historic Mosque-Cathedral Reopens After Fire - Damage Contained
Córdoba, Spain – The famed Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba has reopened to the public following a fire that broke out Friday evening. While the blaze sparked concerns reminiscent of the 2019 Notre Dame fire, authorities report the damage is localized adn the architectural gem remains structurally sound.
What Happened?
The fire erupted around 9:00 PM local time, quickly drawing attention and prompting a swift response from emergency services. Dramatic videos circulated online showing flames and smoke rising from within the historic building, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Fortunately, firefighters contained the blaze, preventing a larger-scale disaster.
According to Córdoba Mayor José María Bellido, the damage is “significant, but very, very localized.” The majority of the impact is concentrated within a chapel – specifically the Almanzor nave – where the fire originated. The chapel’s roof unfortunatly collapsed due to the flames and the weight of water used during firefighting efforts.
Assessing the Damage
Approximately 50-60 square meters of the building sustained damage.
The total interior area of the Mosque-Cathedral spans around 3,000 square meters, putting the affected area in viewpoint.
The Almanzor nave has been cordoned off with barriers as a precaution.
35 firefighters worked thru the night to monitor the site and cool the walls.Currently, forensic police are investigating the cause of the fire. Initial reports suggest a mechanical sweeping machine may have been the source of the ignition, as reported by ABC and other news outlets.
A History of Resilience
This isn’t the first time the Mosque-Cathedral has faced a fire. Records indicate two previous incidents occurred in 1910 and 2001. Though, each time, the building has demonstrated remarkable resilience.
Originally constructed as a mosque between the 8th and 10th centuries under the Umayyad dynasty, the site reflects Córdoba’s rich and complex history.Following the Christian reconquest of Spain in the 13th century, it was converted into a cathedral, with subsequent architectural modifications over the centuries.
