Remaining discreet on the subject of the crisis in which Québec solidaire (QS) has been plunged since the departure of its co-spokesperson Émilise Lessard-Therrien, the deputy Sol Zanetti comes out of his silence to guide the debates which are beginning within his side. He says he wants to govern, of course, but not at any cost.

I want us to be a government party, but not a party or a government like the others, writes the MP for the Jean-Lesage constituency in an open letter addressed to the members of QS. It thus echoes the call for party modernization launched by its co-spokesperson and parliamentary leader Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois in the storm caused by the departure of Ms. Lessard-Therrien.

Sol Zanetti sees this crisis as an opportunity to make choices. Without disavowing the pragmatic vision of Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, he warns against a repeat of the 2022 electoral campaign, during which the party conformed to the framework, according to him, and thus lost thousands of votes. Difficult questions are needed, insists the supportive MP.

Should we become good at this or develop it by taking the risk of regularly setting foot outside?

Just like Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, Sol Zanetti says he advocates a modernization of the party. While wishing to obtain power, he questions the place of Québec solidaire in a Parliament that he describes as being patriarchal, colonial, centralizing and not very democratic.

According to him, Mr. Nadeau-Dubois has proven in the past that he has the ability to think outside the box. I think he is capable of it. I think we are all capable, writes Mr. Zanetti.

Sol Zanetti says he does not fear the implosion of his party, despite the discontent spreading among members on social media. Rather, he launches a call for reflection and mobilization.

The departure of Émilise Lessard-Therrien, a failure for the party

The member for Jean-Lesage says he is deeply upset by the departure of Émilise Lessard-Therrien. He wants his party to learn from what he describes as a collective failure.

The difficult financial situation of the party and the extra-parliamentary role of Ms. Lessard-Therrien have created an inequality between the two co-spokespeople, male and female, which is difficult to resolve, according to Mr. Zanetti.

There were actions that were taken, but they were not strong enough and they did not come quickly enough.

This feminist aspect must not be eclipsed in the tumult that is currently shaking Québec solidaire, insists the MP. The minimum the party can do to honor [l’]engagement [d’Émilise Lessard Therrien]it is to make the necessary political assessments.
