Baby photo

Amalia – beautiful – dealt since childhood with rude reactions to her appearance. “I was there for half an hour,” said the princess, who was surprised by comments on a baby photo. She talks about it in book that she made together with Claudia de Breij. She wouldn’t wish that kind of criticism on her worst enemy for a lifetime. The princess has built up a wall since she was 12 because otherwise she might ‘go crazy’.

The princesses themselves are anonymous on social media, but try to read as few nasty comments as possible. Amalia: ‘You always get things here and there. Not always fun, but in the end you also learn to deal with the world.’

Psychologist

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima teach their daughters to share what bothers them at home. Criticism is discussed at the kitchen table. “We are all in the same boat. I can go to my mother and say: hey, this was said about me and I don’t find that very relaxing at all,” says Princess Alexia during the summer photo session last year.

If things get really difficult, professional help is called in. Amalia and Alexia have already spoken to a psychologist. Princess Amalia talked about it three years ago: ‘Sometimes it all gets too much for me and then I talk to someone. If I need it, I will make an appointment. Just vent and then I’ll be done for another month.’

Protect your privacy

Queen Máxima wanted her daughters to be strong enough to deal with comments. You notice that: they are confident girls who have learned to stand up for themselves. When it comes to criticism, people are taught not to take it personally and to stay close to themselves. Princess Alexia explains how this works: “I know who I am, my family knows who I am, my friends know who I am. As long as it stays the same and stays good, then I don’t lose sleep over it.”

And that attitude is reflected in the short answers from the princesses on King’s Day. They share little about their lives or personalities in order to protect what is theirs from outside opinions. It is that wall that Princess Amalia talked about before.
