Researchers using advanced CT scans have discovered that crocodile brains have remained virtually unchanged for over 100 million years, revealing an extraordinarily effective evolutionary design that survived mass extinctions. Meanwhile, paleontologists in Colombia uncovered a 60-million-year-old giant crocodile species that grew to 20 feet and fed on fish.

For the past 100 million years, crocodiles, alligators, caimans, and gharials have weathered dramatic shifts in climate and habitat. These predatory reptiles even endured the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. Despite those environmental upheavals, their brains have changed very little over tens of millions of years, according to findings published in the Journal of Anatomy.

Researchers from the Swedish Museum of Natural History utilized advanced computed tomography scanning technology to peer inside the skulls of both modern and extinct crocodilians. The study examined 43 species, encompassing living animals such as the American alligator, the Yacare caiman, and the Nile crocodile, alongside long-lost prehistoric relatives.

Examining fossilized skulls visually often presents a major challenge because many extinct reptiles look nearly identical on the outside. By deploying CT scans to analyze hidden internal structures within the braincase and sensory organs, the research team successfully differentiated between otherwise indistinguishable species. Co-author Paul Burke notes that this anatomical stability helps explain how these creatures outlived other vertebrate animals that succumbed to historical mass extinctions.

A 60-Million-Year-Old Giant Discovered in Colombia

While modern crocodilian brain architecture remained remarkably stable, evolution still produced striking physical variations in prehistoric ecosystems. In a separate excavation at a coal mine in Colombia, scientists unearthed a previously unknown species of prehistoric freshwater crocodile named Acherontisuchus guajiraensis.

Described in the journal Palaeontology, the ancient predator lived approximately 60 million years ago. It inhabited swampy tropical environments alongside Titanoboa, the largest known snake in the world. The beast reached a length of 20 feet, roughly the maximum size of today’s saltwater crocodiles.

Specialized Diets Challenge Evolutionary Assumptions

The newly identified Colombian species possessed physical traits distinct from other ancient crocodilians found at the same site, sporting a specialized diet geared toward feeding on lungfish and bonefish. Researchers point out that it stands as the first known land animal from the Paleocene New World tropics specialized for eating fish.

Bloch, who led the excavation alongside Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute paleobotanist Carlos Jaramillo, emphasized that the discovery highlights an unexpected level of complexity in the evolutionary history of crocodilians.
