Three mainland Chinese researchers have won the Future Science Prize, taking home substantial prize money each. Announced jointly in Beijing and Hong Kong on August 13, the awards recognize breakthroughs in life sciences, physical sciences, and mathematics.
Often referred to as China’s Nobel Prize, the Future Science Prize announced its latest winners across three distinct categories.
Life Sciences, Materials, and Mathematics Winners Recognized
The prize distributes awards across three fields: the Life Science Prize, the Physical Science Prize, and the Mathematics and Computer Science Prize. Each recipient receives a cash award. Now in its eleventh year, the program has honored 49 scientists since its inception according to Now News.
Zhang is recognized for pioneering work in uncovering the autophagy mechanisms and physiological functions unique to multicellular organisms. By utilizing the Caenorhabditis elegans model, Zhang analyzed the molecular mechanisms of autophagy and identified a group of autophagy genes—known as EPG genes—found exclusively in multicellular organisms.
Zhao and his collaborators developed new synthesis methods based on molecular self-assembly, establishing ordered mesoporous material systems and creating organic-organic self-assembly strategies.
Yuan was recognized for foundational contributions to arithmetic geometry, including the creation of the arithmetic bigness theory within Arakelov geometry, which provides a new framework for studying small points on algebraic varieties.
Regional Considerations and AI Integration in Hong Kong
Selection committee member Mok Yee-ming emphasized that the evaluation process focuses strictly on scientific originality rather than geographical origin according to regional coverage.
Speaking at the event, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Tung addressed the broader technological landscape, highlighting artificial intelligence as a core driver of modern competitiveness. Sun stated that the Hong Kong government intends to leverage national strategies to advance universal AI initiatives across industries.
