Recently, I found myself unexpectedly back in patient care. A colleague’s injury, compounded by a COVID diagnosis in her backup, necessitated locum tenens coverage. Fortunately, my existing medical liability insurance through the group allowed me to readily assist. This practice operates under the Direct Primary Care (DPC) model, a growing trend that sidesteps many of the administrative hurdles – credentialing and billing complexities – that often plague traditional practices. This streamlined approach allowed me to focus entirely on patient care, a welcome change.
What struck me most during this period wasn’t the clinical work itself,but the patients’ genuine concern for their physician. Instead of the typical frustration with schedule changes, I was met with an outpouring of well wishes. This shift in patient perspective was profoundly refreshing, highlighting the enduring importance of the physician-patient relationship. DPC, by fostering a more direct and personal connection, seems to cultivate a level of trust and empathy often lost in larger, more bureaucratic systems.
Maintaining Competency in a changing World: Licence Renewal and the Rise of AI
Beyond immediate clinical needs, the cyclical demands of maintaining licensure and board certification loomed.State license and DEA number renewals are annual reminders of our professional obligations. I tackled the latest “continuing knowledge assessment” questions,opting to address them proactively rather than waiting for the quarterly deadline.
this prompted an exploration of AI tools as learning aids. I experimented with different prompting strategies - concise distillations of questions versus verbatim input – and found surprisingly consistent accuracy and speed in the responses. However, this raised a critical question: does simply finding the answer through AI equate to genuine learning and retention?
I suspect the answer is no. The act of wrestling with a question, analyzing the nuances, and formulating a reasoned response is crucial for solidifying knowledge. I shifted my approach, using AI to validate my own answers derived through traditional research. This hybrid method proved faster and, more importantly, reinforced my understanding.While the module itself is pass/fail, the intrinsic motivation to validate one’s reasoning - rather than simply chasing a perfect score – proved far more rewarding.

A friend’s experience with blocked data center projects due to environmental concerns served as a stark reminder that even digital convenience has a footprint. As someone committed to environmentalism and sustainability in all aspects of life – from conscious consumer choices to minimizing waste – I realized I needed to be more intentional about my facts-seeking behaviors. Jumping to AI tools simply as they are readily available isn’t a lasting practice, and we, as professionals, have a duty to consider the broader consequences of our choices.
