Conversely, higher elevations, above the temperature inversion layer, remained considerably warmer, with temperatures around 6°C recorded on peaks like Špičák, Boubín, Javorový vrch, and Maruška. This inversion, where warmer air sits above colder air, is a common phenomenon in the region during winter months, trapping cold air in valleys, and depressions.
Weekend Temperature Outlook: A Tale of Two Halves
The weekend promises a continuation of this trend. While mornings will remain cold, with temperatures hovering around freezing and even dipping below zero in many locations, particularly in valleys, daytime temperatures are expected to rise rapidly under sunny skies. Forecasts predict afternoon highs averaging between 11°C and 16°C, with the warmest temperatures likely in the lowlands of Polabí (the Elbe River basin) and South Moravia. Even mountainous regions will see temperatures climb to around 10°C.
The significant difference between morning and afternoon temperatures will result in a large daily temperature range, often exceeding 15°C. In the coldest areas, such as the aforementioned bogs and valleys, this difference could surpass 20°C – a typical occurrence for these locations during winter.
