The academic and spiritual preparations for the school year in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas bring together teachers, directors, and administrative staff from three west-side institutions for collaborative training events, according to regional reporting. The initiative unites faculty members from St. Cecilia Catholic School, St. Mary of Carmel Catholic School, and Santa Clara of Assisi Catholic Academy under a shared mission of faith-based education.
Led by local educators and clergy, the collaborative program is designed to connect small parish schools that often operate with limited funding. Organizers note that the approach helps educators share resources, teaching strategies, and community support as they welcome students back to the classroom.
“The teachers could realize that they are not on an island and could make connections, arrive at new ideas, and see everything from a new perspective,” said Estela Valdez, principal of St. Cecilia Catholic School, as reported by local media coverage.
Spiritual Retreat at San Rafael Retreat Center
The joint preparation began with a morning mass at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, followed by a spiritual retreat at the San Rafael Retreat Center in southern Dallas. Approximately 70 staff members and school leaders participated in the opening events, which focused on shared reflections and community building.
Victor Argueta, principal of St. Mary of Carmel Catholic School, highlighted the importance of the gathering for smaller campuses in the diocese. “We are very similar schools, small schools, where the funds are not the best for any of the three, so uniting to fight for the same thing—which is to bring the faith to the children—and that this message of love for God arrives through the teachers who lived this retreat, is marvelous,” Argueta stated in published accounts.
The spiritual reflections during the retreat were led by Father Cesar García, parochial vicar at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Dallas, and Deacon Andrés Barraza of St. Cecilia Catholic School. Music directors from each participating campus collaborated to provide live choir performances during the services.
Academic Preparation and Diocesan Support
Following the initial spiritual retreat, faculty members from the three schools reconvened at St. Cecilia Catholic School for structured academic training sessions. The curriculum was facilitated by the Catholic Schools Office of the Diocese of Dallas, providing standardized professional development that typically occurs independently at individual campuses.
Administrators emphasize that geographical proximity—with distances ranging between three to five miles separating the three west Dallas schools—provides a natural foundation for ongoing cooperation. The student bodies across these institutions consist largely of children from Hispanic households, accounting for approximately 90% of total enrollment.
“Every school has its gifts, advantages, things that each one does well, and why not share it with others?” Valdez noted regarding the inter-school collaboration. “The best way that we can improve and grow is to help each other with ideas and with resources.”
