Former ESPN analyst Dan Patrick has criticized ESPN and reporter Adam Schefter for allegedly withholding information regarding a serious accident involving San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.
The controversy centers on the timing of the disclosure. The San Francisco 49ers reported that Shanahan suffered multiple injuries in an accident on July 14, but the organization did not make the news public for 11 days. According to Patrick, ESPN’s reporting surfaced almost immediately after the team’s official statement, suggesting the network sat on the information until the team gave permission to release it.
According to an ESPN report authored by Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner, Shanahan’s injuries were extensive. The head coach suffered a severe concussion, broke his nose, three ribs, and his hand, and required more than 40 stitches to his face. Due to the recovery process, Shanahan missed a portion of the team’s training camp.
Dan Patrick Questions ESPN’s Journalistic Integrity
Speaking on his podcast, Dan Patrick highlighted the precise timing of the news break to suggest a coordinated release between the 49ers and ESPN. Patrick noted that the San Francisco 49ers posted their official statement at midnight Eastern on Saturday, with Adam Schefter posting a tweet on the situation one minute later, followed by the full ESPN article one minute after that.
“Why is ESPN holding the information? Why are the Niners?” Patrick asked during the broadcast. While he stated he understood why a team would want to keep medical information private, he argued that a news-gathering organization should operate differently. Patrick specifically questioned if ESPN told the 49ers they would not release the information until the team was ready.
Patrick further characterized the delay as a failure of reporting, stating, “This isn’t journalism, not really reporting. They’re giving you the information and the acknowledgement of, ‘Okay, now you can tell everybody.’” He referenced the philosophy of FOX analyst Jay Glazer, who maintains that true journalism involves uncovering information that parties prefer to keep hidden.
NFL Ties and Information Control
The debate over the 11-day silence also touched upon the corporate relationship between the league and the network. Patrick pointed out that the NFL now owns 10% of ESPN, questioning if this financial and structural tie influenced the decision to delay the story.
Adding context to the leak, NFL analyst Chris Simms admitted he was aware of the accident before the public announcement. Simms attributed his knowledge to the close relationship his family, including his father Phil Simms, shares with the Shanahans. Simms suggested that Adam Schefter’s own personal relationship with the head coach’s family might have been the reason ESPN waited for the team’s signal to publish.
