(Image: A professional headshot of Professor ko,conveying approachability and expertise)
The marketing landscape is undergoing a seismic shift. Consumer behaviour is evolving at an unprecedented rate, driven by emerging technologies, personalized experiences, and a constant influx of data. As a professor at the Lubin School of Business, I’m dedicated to equipping students with the analytical skills and critical thinking abilities necessary to not just navigate this change, but to lead it. My research focuses on understanding these evolving consumer dynamics and developing innovative methodologies to unlock actionable insights for businesses.
My Core Focus: Bridging Theory and Practice in a Data-Driven World
My teaching philosophy centers around the integration of both established marketing principles and cutting-edge technologies. I teach courses including Marketing Research (MAR 222, MAR 635, MGT 684), Visual Analytics (MAR 368, MAR 657), Predictive Analytics (MAR 664), and guide students thru autonomous research projects in the Business Honors Program (MAR 495). I believe in a hands-on approach, emphasizing practical application alongside theoretical understanding.
This commitment extends to embracing the potential – and acknowledging the limitations – of Generative AI. I actively encourage students to responsibly experiment with Gen-AI tools for tasks like data exploration, analysis, and visualization.Though, this isn’t about replacing critical thought; it’s about augmenting it. We rigorously discuss academic integrity, plagiarism boundaries, and the importance of evaluating AI-generated outputs with a discerning eye.The goal is to foster informed judgment about when and how to leverage these powerful tools effectively.
Why Marketing Research Matters Now More Than ever
The need for robust marketing research has never been greater. The way consumers shop today is radically different than even a few years ago. Digital platforms, AI-driven personalization, and the sheer volume of available data demand a constant re-evaluation of traditional marketing approaches.
Here’s why advancing research in this area is critical:
* Evolving Consumer Behavior: understanding the nuances of how consumers make decisions in a rapidly changing digital surroundings is paramount. Traditional models are frequently enough insufficient to explain current behaviors.
* The Power of New data Sources: We now have access to unprecedented amounts of consumer-generated data – clickstream patterns, social media interactions, mobile behaviors, and more. Extracting meaningful insights from this “big data” requires sophisticated analytical techniques.
* Methodological Innovation: Staying at the forefront of methodological innovation allows us to capture shifting behaviors, understand consumer needs more accurately, and develop insights that are truly relevant.
* Data-Driven Decision Making: Ultimately, advancing marketing research empowers businesses to make informed, data-driven decisions, leading to more effective strategies and a stronger return on investment.
My Journey: From transitioning to Analytics to Empowering Future Leaders
My own path to becoming a marketing analytics expert wasn’t without its challenges. Transitioning into the field required a critically important investment in learning new technologies and tools for working with big data and unstructured data. The learning curve was steep, and there were moments of feeling overwhelmed by new programming languages, analytical methods, and rapidly evolving digital tools.
However, I was lucky to have a strong support system. A dedicated mentor provided invaluable guidance, and a collaborative network of talented peers pushed me to grow. This experience underscored the importance of perseverance, a willingness to embrace lifelong learning, and the power of a strong professional community. It’s a lesson I now strive to instill in my students.
The Greatest Reward: Seeing My Students Succeed
While I’m proud of my research contributions and my commitment to staying at the cutting edge of the field, my greatest triumph is undoubtedly the success of my students. There’s nothing more rewarding than witnessing their growth and seeing them achieve their goals.
Receiving updates about graduate school acceptances, job offers, and internship experiences is incredibly fulfilling.Seeing them walk across the stage at graduation, confident and prepared for the next chapter, reinforces why I chose this profession. Their accomplishments are shared victories, and they are the achievements I value most.
A Lesson for the Future: Embrace Challenge and Persistence
If I could impart one single lesson to my students,it would be this: Embrace challenge and persistence. Learning is rarely linear. There will be obstacles, setbacks, and moments of doubt. But it’s through facing these difficulties and continuing to push forward that we truly grow and achieve long-term success.
