An acclaimed playwright and novelist, essayist and publicist, Dinu Săraru stirred up several controversies after 1989. He started his journalistic career in the Romanian Broadcasting, working as a reporter in the Cultural Office, during the 1950-1960 period. He wrote reports and reviews, and for a while published theatrical and literary chronicles.

Over time, he held several positions in different newsrooms. He was editorial secretary general at Revista Secolul 20 and at Luceafărul. He wrote, as a journalist, at Scânteia Tineretului, and was head of Romanian Television publications. He also held the positions of deputy editor-in-chief and then editor-in-chief of the Cultural Editorial Office of TVR.

He was the director of the Small Theater and the Very Small Theater in Bucharest between 1977 and 1990. In this capacity, Dinu Săraru was part of the Central Committee of the PCR.

After the 1989 Revolution, he was marginalized for a long time by the new power. He was appointed director of the National Theater in 2001, thanks to the then president, Ion Iliescu, whom he supported in the election campaign. Dinu Săraru led this institution until 2004 when he resigned. He decided to retire with the resignation of the Minister of Culture and Religion Răzvan Theodorescu.

The consecration is brought to him by the novel Some Peasants

Dinu Săraru published the first articles as early as 1951, in the magazine “Tănărul scritre”. In 1966 he published the volume “Romanian Theater and Contemporary Artists”. Later, his play “The Third Gong” appeared in 1973. The novel that brought him literary recognition was “Some Peasants”, which appeared in 1974. Like his other writings, the novel was screened, with title “Fox Hunt”.

Episodes from the novel “Some Peasants” were repeated and developed in his second book, “Clipa”, but also in the third one, “Love and Revolution”. The three books made Dinul Săraru famous before 1989 and were strongly contested after the Revolution. Literary critics after 1990 spoke about the implicit adherence to the style of the socialist novel, on the subject of collectivization.

In 2004, he published the novel “Ciocoii noi cu bodyguard”, after which another film was shot, directed by Șerban Marinescu.

The message of Nicu Alifantis on his last anniversary

On January 30, 2024, when it was the last anniversary of the well-known writer, the artist Nicu Alifantis wanted to write some special words dedicated to Dinu Săraru.

“The great gain of my passage through life, at least until now, has been to meet people, who in one way or another, more or less, more discreetly or more intensely, have marked my existence. Never, never, can these meetings be forgotten. Through their value and their well-defined personality, they left me a legacy, either a word, a deed, or a gesture, deeply embedded in my mind, but especially in my heart.

You wonder sometimes, and rightly so, how you can thank these people who once, at a certain moment in your existence, extended a hand to you, gave you strength, motivated you, made you feel “important”… Simple. Don’t forget them and, above all, carry them in your heart.

Happy birthday, my dear Om Mare from Teatrul Mic, happy birthday, Mr. Dinu Săraru!”, Nicu Alifantis sent him.
