A 23-year-old motorist in Montpellier sparked a high-speed pursuit early Wednesday morning after refusing to stop for law enforcement while driving an uninsured vehicle on a dedicated bus lane. According to reports from the French National Police, the suspect reached speeds of up to 175 kilometers per hour before crashing his Porsche into an anti-intrusion pit on a local tramway line.
The incident unfolded at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, along the Avenue de la Justice de Castelnau. Officers from the anti-crime brigade, known locally as the BAC, spotted a Porsche traveling unlawfully on the city’s bus lanes and signaled the driver to pull over. Instead of complying, the motorist accelerated, touching off a dangerous pursuit through municipal streets.
Investigators stated that the vehicle fled through the Aiguelongue neighborhood before looping back onto the Avenue de la Justice de Castelnau. During this phase of the chase, authorities recorded the vehicle traveling at 120 km/h in an urban zone strictly regulated with a 50 km/h limit. Police noted that the driver crossed multiple traffic signals without caution, including one intersection where the car surged past at 150 km/h, nearly striking an uninvolved civilian vehicle.

The pursuit escalated as the vehicle crossed onto the Avenue François Delmas, also known as the road to Nîmes. According to law enforcement accounts, the sports car hit a top speed of 175 km/h before shifting toward the banks of the Verdanson stream.
The dangerous trajectory came to an abrupt halt when the driver attempted to navigate the tracks utilized by Montpellier’s Line 2 tramway network.
