José Ramón García, deputy director of postgraduate studies at the Central University of Venezuela, explained that Medicine postgraduate degrees have different durations in different universities in the country and it is proposed to unify them.
Caracas. “The information shown in the document is part of approaches that, until now, are not definitive”pointed out José Ramón García, deputy director of postgraduate from the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), in reference to the images released through social networks, which show the new agreements of medical schools from several universities in the country.
The dissemination of part of the document shows the changes around the duration of postgraduate periods.
“Postgraduate degrees at different universities have different durations. For example, the Pediatric Surgery postgraduate degree at the UCV is three years, but in Maracaibo it is five years. So we are looking to unify”Garcia stated.
In that sense, he pointed out that most programs have a duration of four years, but others have a priority. “That means that to do a postgraduate degree in Cardiology, you must have training in Internal Medicine first.”.

Gacía insisted that the decision of the years of duration is a vision of all universitiesbut not something definitive because it must be discussed with the Venezuelan Medical Federation, the networks of scientific societies, assistance organizations of the national health system (Social Security and Ministry of Health) and the technical table of the Planning Office of the University Sector (OPPOSITE), as well as with the National Council of Universities.
“All these entities must give their opinion to reach an agreement and say: the postgraduate degrees of all universities last so long. But that takes time for all of us to have a similar curriculum that in turn allows us to be on par with international standards.”.
New agreements
García mentioned that representatives of the National Council of Postgraduate Directors and Coordinators of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences participate in the discussion, who provide their advice. to establish the parameters of the agreements.
The meetings are attended by postgraduate representatives from different higher education centers such as the Universidad de los Andes, the Universidad Centro Occidental Lisandro Alvarado, Universidad del Zulia, Universidad Nacional Experimental Francisco de Miranda, Universidad de Oriente and the UCV.
“We have tried to standardize the scale of all universities and ensure that it has similar characteristics in all of them. Before, different things were requested in each one”he explained.
Besides the duration of each postgraduate degreethe exam dates were discussed, which were different in each house of study.
“The exam was previously taken on a Saturday at one university, then another Saturday at another, which resulted in two candidates competing at two universities at the same time.”García indicated.

“It was seen coming, due to the hospital crisis, more time is required to meet surgical records and maintain quality”says one of the messages that responds to the publication on social networks, about the duration of medical postgraduate degrees.
García responds that the approach is wrong because the idea is not to keep them for more years than they need, but rather to students are trained and that during their teaching and care practice within hospitals they manage to acquire sufficient skills and tools for their work performance.
The intention of extending the duration is for the postgraduate degree to be recognized abroad, where if the doctor does not comply with the times of that country, his specialization is not taken into account.
Regarding the document published on social networks, he highlighted that they will publish a new one with other points: That one that came out, we do not know who did it or how it was done. What I can say is that it is a working paper that needs to be discussed so that postgraduates have the same guidelines.
He clarified that until the discussion ends, postgraduate times in all universities remain the same.
