The Hanwha eagles are facing a critical juncture in their quest for the Korean Series. Down 2-1 in the best-of-five series against the Samsung Lions, the Eagles will entrust an unprecedented duty to 18-year-old rookie pitcher Jeong Woo-joo in wednesday night’s game. A win secures their frist Korean Series appearance since 2006.
This isn’t a typical playoff move. Jeong has never thrown more than 54 pitches in a single game, raising eyebrows about the Eagles’ strategy. However, circumstances dictate the bold decision, stemming from the unavailability of key reliever and recent standout, Moon Dong-ju.
Moon was instrumental in Tuesday’s 5-4 victory, delivering four scoreless innings with six strikeouts. His performance,while crucial,rules him out for this pivotal elimination game,forcing manager kim Kyung-moon to look to the young arm of Jeong.
Jeong was the second overall pick in last year’s KBO draft and has been carefully managed throughout the season. The Eagles prioritized building his endurance, primarily utilizing him in relief. He made only two starts during the regular season, with strict pitch count limits – capped at 54 pitches in his last start on September 15th.
Despite limited innings (53 ⅔ total across 51 appearances), Jeong has demonstrated exceptional talent. He boasts a remarkable 2.85 ERA and an notable 13.75 strikeouts per nine innings – the highest in the KBO among pitchers with at least 50 innings pitched.
His fastball averages a blistering 151.2 kilometers per hour (kph), ranking 11th best among qualified pitchers. this velocity was on full display in his postseason debut on Sunday, where he touched 153 kph with his four-seamer during a scoreless ⅔ inning against the Lions.
The Eagles aren’t expecting a complete game from Jeong. A strong three innings, or even just navigating the Lions’ lineup once, would be considered a success. The Lions have already struggled against high-velocity pitching in this series, notably against Moon.
Moon himself offered encouragement to the young pitcher after Tuesday’s game. He emphasized Jeong’s high strikeout rate and urged him to confidently leverage his considerable talent. Moon believes the Lions will respect Jeong’s abilities, and the rookie should capitalize on that.
