Landslides adn Severe Weather Impact New Zealand – January 24, 2026
Critically important landslide risks and severe weather are impacting multiple regions of New Zealand, prompting evacuations and disrupting travel. Evacuations are underway on the East Coast, and recovery efforts are focused in Mount Maunganui following a fatal landslide. Severe weather watches are in effect for the lower South Island.
East Coast Evacuations
Evacuations are in progress in Onepoto and parts of Te araroa on the East Coast due to high landslide risks. Approximately 30 houses are affected, with residents being relocated to stay with friends, family, or within the community. The Tairāwhiti CDEM group has identified the risk, but geotech assessments are still pending to determine when residents can safely return home.
Civil Defense is coordinating the response with Police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ).
Mount Maunganui Landslide Recovery
Emergency services have transitioned from rescue to recovery operations following a landslide at a campground in Mount Maunganui. Remains of victims have been found and are being transported to a mortuary in hamilton.Six people were unaccounted for since Thursday. New Zealand Police are leading the recovery effort.
Severe Weather in the South Island
The lower South Island is bracing for strong winds and persistent rain. Heavy rain watches are in place for Otago south of Alexandra, Oamaru, and mainland Southland. Strong wind watches cover Coastal Otago, Southland from Dunedin to Bluff, and Stewart Island.MetService warns that winds could reach severe gale force in exposed areas.
