Northland Bridge Reopens, Helena Bay Hill Remains Blocked After Severe Storms
Temporary repairs have restored road access across the Ngaiotonga Bridge on Rāwhiti Road, east of Kawakawa, Northland, reconnecting communities cut off as January 18th. though, a meaningful slip at Helena Bay Hill continues to block access to Whangārei, with repairs expected to take several weeks.
Storm Damage adn Recovery Efforts
Much of the North Island experienced severe storms in mid-January, bringing torrential rain, flooding, and landslides. The damage impacted infrastructure and isolated communities. The Rāwhiti road bridge approach was washed away,but the bridge structure itself remained intact.
Work to reinstate the bridge began on friday, January 23rd, once diggers could access the site. Forty truckloads of rock and gravel were used to fill the gap, allowing for a limited reopening on Saturday, January 24th. Motorists are advised to drive slowly over the bridge until permanent repairs are completed after the long weekend.
Impacted Communities
The reopening of the Ngaiotonga Bridge provides vital access for residents of Ōakura, Punaruku, and other settlements, connecting them to Russell. However, the ongoing closure of Helena Bay Hill continues to disrupt travel to Whangārei.
Extreme Rainfall in Punaruku
Punaruku, near the Ngaiotonga Bridge, experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM on January 18th. The area received as much rain in those two hours as it typically does in the entire month of January. RNZ reports on the widespread impact of the storms.
