Emil Uhlin sits 19th overall after grinding through a grueling opening day at the European Athletics Championships.
Stubborn Headwinds Derail the Morning
The reigning Swedish champion from Falu IK faced demanding weather conditions and mixed results during the opening day of the decathlon.
Tricky winds complicated both the long jump and the shot put events. The morning session opened with the 100-meter sprint, where Uhlin clocked 11.27 seconds.
Strong headwinds heavily impacted the runners’ mechanics on the track.
“Jag vaggade lite som en anka, det var lite spänt. Det är så det blir när man springer i motvind,” Uhlin noted regarding the opening sprint.
Wind complications persisted into the second event, the long jump. After faulting on his first two attempts, Uhlin secured a valid mark on his final try to stay in the competition.
Det sista hoppet är godkänt, men det är inte mer än så, det är så jävla kort. Men det är poäng.”
His successful final leap measured 6.72 meters.
High Jump Spark Salvages the Evening
Following the long jump, competitors moved to the shot put ring. Uhlin entered the event with high expectations, targeting a 14-meter throw.
The turning point of the evening arrived in the high jump, historically one of Uhlin’s stronger disciplines. After clearing 1.99 meters on his initial attempt, he encountered trouble at 2.02 meters before clearing the bar on his third try. He then successfully cleared a season-best height of 2.05 meters on his first attempt, though 2.08 meters proved too high.
The grueling opening day concluded with the 400-meter race, where Uhlin crossed the finish line close to his season’s best with a time of 49.11 seconds.
Looking Ahead to Day Two
Reflecting on the fluctuation between the morning and evening sessions, Uhlin emphasized that the multi-event competition truly tests athletes across both days.
“Med tanke på hur dåligt förmiddagspasset var så var det en bra avslutning på kvällen. Säsongsbästa i höjd och ganska nära på 400 också,” Uhlin said. “Dagen är ok.”
At the conclusion of the first day, Uhlin sits in 19th place overall with 3930 points. Germany’s Leo Neugebauer leads the standings with 4483 points.
The decathlon resumes on Thursday, with the 110-meter hurdles opening the morning session.
