the Foundation: IRDAI, NHA, and a Common IT Infrastructure
The groundwork for this transformation was laid by a joint working group of the National Health Authority (NHA) and the Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDAI). their report, published in September 2019, outlined a vision for a national health claims platform built on these standardized eObjects. Specifically, the eClaims object is poised to be a game-changer.Why? Because when healthcare providers submit claims in this standardized format, payment turnaround times are expected to dramatically improve. This is a truly innovative breakthrough.
A Parallel to the FinTech Revolution
This approach mirrors the success of India’s fintech revolution. Remember the Unified Payments Interface (UPI)? The goverment created the UPI platform, than released the APIs for developers. This sparked innovation,leading to the widespread adoption of wallets like Paytm,Google Pay,and PhonePe.
The results were astounding.UPI transactions went from virtually zero to one billion per month in just three years. we can expect a similar trajectory with eObjects in healthcare.
The Financial Lever and the Importance of governance
eObjects create a powerful “financial lever” for the healthcare market. Faster claims processing means quicker payments to providers, improving their financial stability and encouraging participation in the digital ecosystem. However, this success isn’t guaranteed.
Strong governance is critical.India must recognize this truth to ensure the triumphant implementation of this digital health transformation.
