Kaikohe Substation Incident: Investigation Underway After Reported Boom
Another incident has occurred at the kaikohe substation, prompting a response from Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) and raising concerns about power stability in the Far North. This follows a critically important outage that impacted over 23,000 homes and businesses just six days prior.
A local resident reported hearing a loud boom around 5:20 PM. she observed doors to a substation building appearing to have been forced open, wiht smoke or water vapor emanating from within. Immediately, she contacted emergency services, as no personnel were present at the site.
Emergency Response & Initial findings
Fire crews from Kaikohe and Ōkaihau responded to the call. Three firefighters, equipped with protective gear and breathing apparatus, entered the building to assess the situation. Fortunately, no visible fire was detected.
Currently, Top Energy personnel are on-site, working to determine the cause of the incident and ensure the substation’s continued operation. Their presence suggests ongoing assessment and potential repairs.
Recurring Concerns & Power Status
This event is particularly concerning given the widespread power outage experienced last Friday. that outage was initially attributed to a tree falling on a 33-kilovolt line near Mount Pokaka, south of Kerikeri. Though, the reason for the Kaikohe substation’s shutdown during that event remains unclear.
As of now, the northern portion of the district – including areas like Doubtless Bay, Kaitaia, the Aupouri Peninsula, and North Hokianga – continues to have power. This mirrors the pattern observed during last week’s disruption.
