American fashion icon Iris Apfel has died at the age of 102. Apfel’s death was reported on her Instagram page.
Apfel was known for her striking appearance. She often wore large glasses, red lipstick and colorful clothes. “Color is one of the most important things in the world,” she said in an interview. “I can’t live without color.”
Apfel was born in New York. She studied art history and went to art school. Apfel was an expert in textiles and antique fabrics.
She and her husband owned a textile manufacturing company and specialized in restoration work. They have done work for nine different American presidents, including Truman and Clinton.
The fashion icon never retired. Apfel enjoyed fame on social media later in life and amassed almost 3 million followers on Instagram over the years. Her style was the subject of museum exhibitions, such as the one at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A documentary film was also made about her with the name Iris.
