  • The general meeting of FC Basel will take place on Monday.

  • How much trust does the board of directors around David Degen and Co. still have?

  • Bernhard Burgener’s trust was withdrawn in 2020.

The direct descent is no longer possible for FC Basel. The Barrageplatz before the Lucerne game on Sunday is a long way off. Nevertheless, there is still unrest at FC Basel. There are several reasons. As a reminder: The FCB bosses around David Degen recently admitted that they had put money into the club through a previously unknown company.

Three million francs flowed into the club in 2021 via Horizon2026 via Holding. In the last few weeks, another eight million were injected as loans – all hidden. It was also announced that FC Basel would have gone bankrupt at the end of 2021 if the millions had not been brought in.

David Degen is the boss of FC Basel.

Will David Degen be confirmed?

It also became public that, contrary to previous statements, Degen received a wage from FC Basel. According to the “Basler Zeitung”, Degen will receive a fixed salary of 300,000 francs. (What else became known, you can read here). In addition, another FCB identification figure, sports director apprentice, sports committee member and club legend Valentin Stocker, will probably leave the club in the summer.

In the background of all these drumbeats, the general meeting of FC Basel will take place on Monday. For the board of directors around Degen and Co., after a turbulent year, it is the evening of truth. Normally, the vote that the association’s delegate in the working group asks for at the end of the general meeting is purely a formality.

In times of big confessions and secrets, however, it will be interesting to see how great the support will be for Degen and his fellow shareholders. In 2023, Degen received 883 of 922 votes (95.7 percent), Dan Holzmann 894 (97 percent), Andreas Rey 894 (97 percent) and Ursula Rey-Krayer 909 (98.6 percent).

In 2020 there was a bang for Burgener and Co.

But what does it look like at the moment? Will there be a big bang? In 2020, for example, we saw that everything doesn’t always go harmoniously at the general meeting. Four years ago, the members withdrew their trust in then-President Bernhard Burgener (39 percent approval) and CEO Roland Heri (26 percent). It was the beginning of the end of Burgener’s rule.

Things could get tricky for Degen and Co. if members take the opportunity to directly ask critical questions of the board members present. This refers, for example, to the Muttenzer curve near Basel businessman Benjamin Aebischer, who has used his social media channels in recent weeks to sharply criticize the Basel boss. According to reports, he will also be at the AGM on Monday.
