Final Fantasy XIV is set to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026, marking the game’s debut on a Nintendo platform. The announcement was made during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim by Naoki Yoshida, producer and director, followed by confirmation from Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu. This release will coincide with the early access phase for the Switch 2 version, ahead of its official launch later that summer.
The Switch 2 release will bring the full MMORPG experience to a portable device for the first time, allowing players to access the game’s existing content on the go. However, a significant detail has emerged regarding access: players will need a separate subscription to play Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2, even if they already maintain an active subscription on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox platforms. This means cross-platform progression will require managing multiple subscriptions unless players opt for a single primary platform.
To mitigate the cost burden, Square Enix has confirmed a 50 percent discount for existing subscribers who wish to add the Switch 2 version to their account. The company clarified that a Nintendo Switch Online membership will not be required to play Final Fantasy XIV on the Switch 2, distinguishing it from other online titles on the platform.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV will launch alongside the game’s sixth expansion, Evercold, though the expansion itself is scheduled for release in January 2027. Evercold will initiate the Godless Realms Saga story arc and introduce a level cap increase from 100 to 110, two modern jobs (a tank and a physical ranged DPS), new cities, regions, dungeons, trials, and a new ultimate raid. The expansion will also feature a battle system overhaul with “Reborn” and “Evolved” modes, where the new jobs will only be accessible in Evolved mode.
Further details from the Fan Festival 2026 keynote revealed that Evercold will include updates to the armory system to better support job switching, revised seasonal reward systems, expanded character customization, and ongoing PvP improvements. The Duty Support System is also set to receive updates to assist players in group content.
Whereas the August 2026 launch window for the Switch 2 version has been confirmed, Square Enix stated that an early access period will precede the official release to test server stability. The company emphasized that the goal is to allow adventurers from more platforms than ever before to join together in the world of Eorzea.
As of the announcement date, no further details have been provided regarding pricing for the standalone Switch 2 subscription or the exact date within August 2026 for the launch. Players are advised to monitor official Square Enix channels for updates on pre-registration, early access sign-ups, and subscription details as the release window approaches.
