FLOOD PREVENTION – Wall demolitions in Toamasina

Canal cleaning work continues in Toamasina.

Walkways and walls have been demolished in some neighborhoods of the urban commune of Toamasina in recent days. They obstruct the flow of water and cause recurring flooding in several neighborhoods of this port city, according to findings. Inspections of infrastructure and structures that block water evacuation continue in this municipality. “Illegal construction is the main cause of flooding in this city. They must be eliminated if we want to protect Toamasina against floods,” said an official in Toamasina yesterday.

The fight against rising water levels is the main mission of the urban commune of Toamasina at the moment. Almost every day, the magistrate of this port city or his team goes into flooded areas to identify the origins of the floods. Just yesterday, Nantenaina Rakotonirina and her team went to the “bus station” of Toamasina to find solutions against the rising waters in this neighborhood. The work consisted of maintaining and cleaning the canals. Every time it rains, the inhabitants of Toamasina have their feet in the water. Just yesterday, several neighborhoods of this port city were under water.
