Free water in restaurants, bars and cafes. The owners of these establishments will be obliged to provide drinking water to all customers. Also, catering companies will not be exempt from this duty, being obliged to offer water to all those who arrive at the respective establishments to pick up an order.

The bill received a favorable vote in Camera Deputies, which is the decision-making body. Once promulgated by President Klaus Iohannis, the law will enter into force.

Amendment which brings the new rules comes in the context in which several EU states have implemented the measure. The amendment was proposed by the former minister of energy, Virgil Popescu.

According to it, “free supply of drinking water through the distribution network to consumers in restaurants, canteens and catering services” will be mandatory.

Obligations for public institutions

The law stipulates that central and local public administration authorities and institutions provide drinking water to people who enter their premises.

Moreover, besides operators businesses that offer public catering services, employers will have the same obligation.

Targeted in this sense are economic operators with “the activity of preparing, preparing, presenting and serving drinks for them in specialized units”.

After the law enters into force, public authorities, owners of bars, restaurants and cafes, will have the obligation to display a message visible to the public.

“This unit offers, upon request and free of charge, drinking water from the tap”, the draft law states.

Representatives of the hospitality sector say that all customers already benefit from this service.

“The rulers gave a law without even asking the participants of the economic game. Obviously they should know that this is still happening today. If someone comes to a restaurant, cafe or anywhere to ask for water, they are given water. But customers have only one request: the water must be drinkable. Governors should also define who controls whether the water has the quality that is necessary and this quality must also be defined,” said Daniel Mischie, HORA’s vice president.
