Developer Sentiment Shifts as Concerns Over Generative AI Grow in Game Industry
A recent report released by the Game Developers Conference (GDC) reveals a meaningful shift in developer sentiment regarding generative AI tools. The 2026 State of the Game Industry report, based on a survey of thousands of game developers, indicates a growing discontent with the impact of AI on the industry, with a majority now expressing negative views.
For the first time, over half of respondents – 52% – believe generative AI is having a detrimental effect on game growth, a considerable increase from 30% in 2025 and 18% in 2024. This growing negativity isn’t linked to a decline in AI adoption, however; usage rates remain consistent, with 52% of developers reporting using these tools in their work, mirroring the 2025 survey results. Despite continued utilization, optimism surrounding generative AI is waning, with only 7% of respondents expressing a positive outlook, down from 13% the previous year.
the report also touches on the implementation of AI policies within companies.While mandatory AI usage remains uncommon,affecting only 6% of workplaces,a significant portion of companies maintain flexible approaches,with 28% allowing optional use,22% permitting some tools while restricting others,and 16% enforcing a complete ban on the technology.
Alongside growing anxieties about AI, the GDC report highlights ongoing challenges within the industry, notably the impact of recent layoffs. One in four game developers reported experiencing job loss in the last 24 months, frequently attributed to studio or department closures, with nearly half of those affected still seeking new employment. While expectations of further layoffs in the next year are moderate at 23%, a considerable 30% of developers remain uncertain about future stability.
