A Final Connection: Jonathan Groff Reflects on a Meaningful Relationship with Gavin Creel
Jonathan Groff recently shared a poignant story about his final interactions with the late Gavin Creel, a relationship that profoundly impacted his life. The actor recounted the bittersweet exchange during a conversation at the New Yorker Festival on October 26th, revealing a deeply personal connection rekindled through a surprising medium.
Several years after dating in 2009, Groff and Creel reconnected following the publication of a New Yorker interview in June 2024. Groff had spoken openly about Creel’s positive influence,detailing how their relationship had altered the course of his life. A few days later, a text message arrived from Creel himself.
Creel’s message was profoundly moving: “I think I know now that I mean as much to you as you mean to me.” This simple statement sparked a renewed connection, leading to continued conversations right up until the Tony Awards.
Groff ultimately won Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in Merrily We Roll Along at the Tony Awards that year. Creel sent a congratulatory message, marking their last direct communication. Tragically, Creel passed away from cancer just three months later, on September 24, 2024.
The initial spark for their connection was ignited during a pivotal moment in the fight for marriage equality. Groff recalled attending the March on Washington with Creel in 2009. He vividly remembers watching creel,bullhorn in hand,directing the marchers.
Inspired by Creel’s passionate advocacy and his own growing feelings, Groff made the decision to publicly come out to Broadway.com. He stated, “I was, like, I fucking love him so much. I’m coming out.”
Reflecting on the timing of their reconnection, Groff expressed gratitude to the interviewer. He acknowledged that it wasn’t the interviewer’s intention to facilitate a final goodbye, but the prospect to exchange those last messages was deeply meaningful.
