Bryan Fuller’s directorial debut, Dust Bunny, which arrived on digital platforms this Tuesday, draws heavily from the cinematic landscape of his upbringing. The film, a unique blend of fantasy and suspense, taps into the nostalgic appeal of “gateway horror” films that captivated a generation. Fuller describes these films as those that introduced young audiences to darker themes while simultaneously empowering protagonists to confront remarkable challenges and mature beyond their years.
He recalls a specific “alchemy of tones” present in classics like Poltergeist, Gremlins, and The Goonies, where fantasy elements were integral to the narrative. This approach resonates strongly in Dust Bunny, which shares thematic connections with films like E.T., focusing on the power of friendship, and Labyrinth, with its fantastical creatures and young heroes navigating complex journeys. According to a recent report by the Motion Picture Association, family-amiable fantasy films saw a 15% increase in viewership in 2024, indicating a continued appetite for this genre.

The story centers around Aurora, a 10-year-old girl portrayed by Sophie Sloan, who believes a monster is responsible for her family’s tragedy. Feeling unheard by her parents, she takes matters into her own hands, enlisting the help of her enigmatic neighbor, a hitman known only as Resident 5B, played by Mads Mikkelsen. The film also features performances by Sigourney Weaver and David Dastmalchian.
Fuller shared that reuniting with Mikkelsen, following their collaboration on the critically acclaimed series Hannibal over three seasons, was a seamless experience. He found Mikkelsen’s willingness to embrace the role of a protector – a stark contrast to his previous portrayal of a chilling antagonist – particularly gratifying.
“It was remarkably easy to envision him in this role,” Fuller explained. “Mads consistently offered support and championed the project, demonstrating a level of dedication that was truly invaluable.”
A delightful anecdote revealed a shared passion between Fuller and mikkelsen: Bruce Lee. This common interest led to an impromptu action sequence featuring Mikkelsen in a Chinatown setting, complete with a Bruce Lee tracksuit and nunchucks. Did you know that Bruce Lee’s ideology of Jeet Kune Do emphasizes adaptability and directness, principles that seemingly influenced
