The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting discussing the war in Ukraine was heated. The reason is because the United States (US) and Russia are accusing each other.

As reported by , Wednesday (7/2/2024), Washington accused Moscow of firing at least nine missiles supplied by North Korea (North Korea) into Ukrainian territory. Meanwhile, Russia labeled the US as a “direct accomplice” in the downing of Moscow’s military transport plane last month.

Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia and Deputy US Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood exchanged these accusations at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council discussing Ukraine which was held on Tuesday (6/2) local time. The meeting was proposed by Moscow.

“To date, Russia has launched DPRK-supplied ballistic missiles against Ukrainian territory at least nine times,” Wood said at a UN Security Council meeting attended by 15 member countries. He uses North Korea’s official name, namely the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Russia has invaded neighboring Ukraine over the past two years. The invasion further worsened relations between Moscow and Washington, which had long been deteriorating due to various conflicts.

“Russia and the DPRK must be held accountable for their actions, which undermine long-term obligations under UN Security Council resolutions,” Wood said in his statement.

Both Moscow and Pyongyang deny Washington’s accusations. But last year, the two countries pledged to deepen mutual military ties.

Russia has stepped up ties with North Korea and other countries hostile to the US, such as Iran, since the start of the war with Ukraine — relations that have raised Western concerns.
