TikTok may no longer remain in the hands of the Chinese ByteDance, the American House of Representatives has just decided. If the Chinese owner does not sell the American part of TikTok within six months, the app will be banned in the US, unless the Senate and judges intervene.

The House decided by an overwhelming majority that the Chinese ByteDance must sell its share of TikTok to an American party. Despite a strong lobby from, among others, former president and presidential candidate Donald Trump and the CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, the vote turned out to the disadvantage of the Chinese company.

These not only concerned Republicans’ fear of distancing themselves from Trump in view of the upcoming elections, they also concerned the risk of unforeseen consequences. Trump and Biden would not regret leaving TikTok

Biden appears to have already said that he will immediately sign the bill when it lands on his desk.
