How about leaving Madonna (and women) alone?

Madonna, When he appeared in Copacabana for the Globo cameras, he became a topic on the networks. Not because of his (enviable) ease, voice, stage posture, etc. The criticism arose because she apparently exaggerated the aesthetic procedures. Or, in a broader analysis, she is criticized for daring to grow old. More than that: she ‘dares’ to celebrate her 40-year career on stage.

Here, I open space for a reflection: How about leaving Madonna (and many women) alone?

In the past, those over 40 were forced to cut their hair (imagine, long hair is for young people). Bangs, no way! Surgeries and aesthetic procedures were only discussed in the confessional, on the verge of death. It’s a sin to assume that you changed the traits that God created…

Paradoxically, assuming gray hair, age, in short, the marks of time, has also always generated prejudice – today it is known as ‘ageism’. We can also add the word ‘misogyny’ to this recipe of social distortion, since, while women are stoned for their choices, men can age as they please.

Finally, anyone who has followed Madonna’s artistic career since the 1980s knows that she never followed these social rules. She has always been innovative, provocative, irreverent and controversial. She has always preached that women should be free so that they can be (and do) what they want in life, on their face, body and soul. Today’s Madonna wouldn’t have it any different.

Last year, on the same social networks that crucify her, she slapped her face (plastered, so what?) and responded to criticisms about her appearance with an outburst.

“Instead of focusing on what I said in my speech, which was about being grateful for the fearlessness and freshness of artists like Sam Smith e Peter Kim, many people chose to only talk about my close-up photos. Photos taken with a long-lens camera that would distort anyone’s face!”, wrote the singer in a publication referring to the criticism after the Grammy Awards.

Here’s a message, especially for women: sisterhood, another virtual buzzword, but little used in real life, concerns the welcome we should have among ourselves. Regardless of whether I like Madonna’s face or not, I like the freedom she provides with her actions.
