Huawei is already making an alternative to Apple’s Vision Pro, which will be lighter and cheaper

One of the leakers active in Chinese social media claims that Huawei is also preparing a device similar to Apple’s Vision Pro mixed reality headset. The device will be called the Huawei Vision and will reportedly be half as heavy as the Apple manufacturer’s product. Not to mention it will cost about half as much.

The figure spreading the news is not just anybody, because Li Nan was the marketing director of Meizu before. So we can take seriously the information he leaks. The Huawei Vision headset is said to weigh 600 places and 350 grams, the former of course is the weight of the Apple Vision Pro. The lighter design allows users to wear the device for a longer period of time and with greater comfort, as many people returned the Vision Pro headsets because they were heavy and uncomfortable to wear for a long time.

Like the Apple Vision Pro, Huawei’s product will be equipped with Sony micro OLED panels with 4K resolution. However, there will be a very important difference between the two devices, as Huawei will not project fake eyes like Apple’s device, which imitates the view of the user’s eyes for external observers through a function called EyeSight.

To drive such a device requires serious hardware. This role will probably be filled by an in-house developed HiSilicon chip, but it is not yet known how the Chinese manufacturer will be able to produce or acquire high-performance chips suitable for the purpose. China’s largest semiconductor manufacturer, SMIC, is currently unable to purchase or use extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) production equipment due to US sanctions. And producing such high-performance chips requires such tools. That being said, SMIC will reportedly be able to produce 5nm chips for Huawei sometime this year with its current equipment fleet.

What is also worth mentioning about the Huawei Vision is that it will cost half as much as the Apple Vision Pro, i.e. the Chinese manufacturer’s first mixed reality headset will be sold for approximately $1,750. That’s still a nice little sum, but it’s undeniably more affordable than the Apple machine’s $3,499 starting price.
