American Basketball Player Finds Success and Beauty in Italy’s Gulf of Poets
Lerici, Italy – February 18, 2026 – Micah Schnyders, a 24-year-old basketball guard from Illinois, is enjoying a fulfilling experience playing for Landini Lerici in Italy’s C maschile (men’s) league. After six months in the Gulf of Poets, the former Eastern Michigan University player expresses satisfaction with his decision to pursue his basketball dreams overseas.
“This is my first time abroad, and it could have been very difficult, but I’m handling the distance from home quite well,” Schnyders said. “I credit the beauty of this place, the climate, the people, my teammates, coaches, and management. I’ve been blessed.”
Schnyders misses his family, but they visited him in November, touring cities like Pisa, Florence, and Milan and approving of his new life in Italy.
He is especially captivated by the Italian landscape and culture. “You can imagine how impressed an american would be by the artistic and historical richness of Italian cities. I’ve seen a gorgeous cathedral in every city – how many do you have?” he remarked, adding that he plans to bring his family to Rome on a future visit, though he was particularly struck by the beauty of the cinque Terre.
The proximity to the sea has also been a important benefit. “Having the sea nearby has really helped ease the feeling of being away from home. Where I’m from (Illinois) and where I studied and played in Michigan, beaches are very far away.”
While he appreciates his current location, Schnyders is confident that Italy’s beauty extends beyond the ligurian coast. “I’ve already said how beautiful this place and its people are; I assume Italy is beautiful everywhere. And the cuisine is world-renowned – you’re very good at cooking and presenting what you prepare.”
Schnyders is actively working to integrate into Italian life, taking Italian lessons twice a week and studying independently. He also benefits from the support of his teammates, many of whom are proficient in English.
Currently, Landini Lerici holds 14th place in the league standings, but Schnyders remains optimistic. “I believe the team has potential. The desire to work hard is there, and that’s arguably the most important thing. You’ll see.”
