A number of vehicles swerved into a gap nearly 18 meters long and fell onto the steep slope below.

“Reporters understand from a press conference held in the city of Meizhou, Guangdong, that the highway collapse disaster… has caused the deaths of 48 people,” the news agency reported. Xinhua on Thursday (2/5) afternoon local time.

Previous reports on Thursday (2/5) morning put the death toll at 36 people.

“In addition, there are three people whose DNA is undergoing further comparison and confirmation,” the news agency added. Xinhua in his report. It is not clear whether the three victims were among the 48 dead.

News agency Xinhua reported that around 30 other people were injured in the incident.

State television recording CCTV shows an excavator digging up a muddy hillside on the collapsed section of the highway. Nearby, a crane lifted wrecked vehicles onto a truck, while people watched behind barricades.
