A crowd gathered in front of the Reichstag chanted “we are the firewall”. The wave of protests against the party has been going on for the fourth week across the country, reports MTI.

On Saturday, in addition to the capital, similar demonstrations were held in Dresden, Freiburg, Augsburg, Krefeld and Hanover.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on the social media site X that the nationwide, mass movement is a strong signal in favor of democracy and the German constitution. According to the chancellor, many people are gathering all over Germany to protest against the forgetting of the past, hatred and hate speech.

Earlier this week, a Forsa poll showed that, although support for the AfD fell below 20 percent for the first time since July, the party remains the second most popular political force in Germany. The popularity list is led by the currently opposition conservatives, while Scholz’s social democratic party is in third place.

The protests were organized as a result of the fact that it was revealed in January that two high-ranking representatives of the AfD participated in an event where, among other things, they discussed a plan for the mass deportation of German citizens with an immigrant background. The AfD denies that the implementation of the proposal is among the party’s ideas.
