Instagram updates its algorithm – this is how it works

Instagram has, like competitors like TikTok, increasingly leaned on algorithms over the past few years to tailor feeds for its users with content they are expected to want to see. With his latest update which was published on their blog they’ve come up with quite a few improvements to that concept, with a focus on giving smaller creators a greater chance to break through.

They have introduced four main changes to make this possible:

  • A new ranking system gives smaller creators more distribution.
  • Reposts are replaced with original content in recommendations.
  • Reposts now include tags that link to the original creator.
  • “Content aggregators” are removed from recommendations aka accounts that aggregate other people’s content without modification.

These measures are taken to prevent the wave of ”content farming” that washed over the platform, as well as on other platforms like TikTok and X. This usually means accounts that directly repost or collect other creators’ original content without modifying, commenting or enhancing it. It will now be harder for these accounts to steal content, when they have to believe or somehow add to the original to become visible in the algorithm.

New original content that does not violate the guidelines, has no visible watermarks, and meets our Instagram recommendation guidelines will now shown to one small audience who the algorithm thinks will appreciate it, regardless of whether they follow the account that posted it or not. In the past, followers and interactions have been predominant in that process, but now everyone will have a chance if it actually makes original content.
