The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the ambassadors of France, Japan, South Korea, Malta, Slovakia and Ecuador this Sunday in a gesture of protest for their support this week for the recognition of Palestine as a full state at the UN before the Security Council.

Israeli Foreign Affairs spokesman Oren Marmorstein announced that all diplomats will be subject to a “firm protest” in person, as will countries that supported the Algerian proposal, such as Russia and China.

The proposal was finally rejected due to the exclusive veto of the United States, which considered it a “premature initiative.”

According to the Israeli spokesperson, the ambassadors will receive “an unequivocal message” that “both the political support for the Palestinians and the call for recognition of the Palestinian State – six months after the massacre of October 7 – constitute a reward for terrorism.”

“Israel will not tolerate the creation of a terrorist State that endangers its citizens,” added the Ministry, which also intends to “clarify to ambassadors” that “instead of making political gestures that reward the terrorist organization Hamas , countries should pressure Hamas to immediately release the 133 men and women held hostage.”

The Palestinians asked the Security Council to accept that a “Palestinian State” already recognized by the majority of capitals would take its “legitimate” place within the United Nations.

The Palestinian Authority will “reconsider” its relations with the United States, following Washington’s veto, according to the president of that body that partially administers the occupied West Bank, Mahmoud Abbas.

“The Palestinian leadership will reconsider its bilateral relations with the United States, in order to guarantee the preservation of the interests of our people, our cause and our rights,” Abbas declared in an interview with the Palestinian press agency Wafa.

The draft resolution, presented by Algeria, obtained 12 votes in favor, one against and two abstentions in the Council.

The vote came after more than six months of Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip, ruled by the Hamas terrorist group, in retaliation for the deadly October 7 incursion by Islamist commandos in southern Israel.

The US veto “sparked unprecedented anger among Palestinians and populations in the region, potentially pushing the region towards more instability, chaos and terrorism,” Abbas warned.

The deputy ambassador of the United States to the UN, Robert Wood, told a group of journalists on Thursday that “we should ask the Arabs what they have achieved” with the vote for Palestine’s full membership in the UN, which did not go ahead. .

Wood expressed that Algeria and Palestine should ask themselves “if it was necessary” to reach this situation and “put the United States in this position” of having to use its right of veto, when they knew in advance that the resolution would not go ahead.

”I don’t see how this moves the issue toward two states,” he said.

The formula defended by the United States consists of a negotiated solution between Israel and Palestine, the diplomat added at the end of Thursday’s session in the Council.

Wood refrained from criticizing other countries for their vote and said that “each country votes according to its national interests,” but noted that this had put his country “in the position of having to vote against that resolution,” he insisted.
